awestruck by this talent…

I am working on a website for an amazing local artist, Michel Galen Belknapp.  I met her at a fundraiser for Canine Advocates, and then ran into her by accident – or should I say she ran into me by accident, when she was delivering a painting to an auction winner from a Relay for Life event.  The recipient lives in the lot that is behind and to the right of my house and we often get deliveries for them.  The funny part was although I recognized her instantly, she couldn’t quite place me.  Probably because the Canine Advocates event was a sock-hop and I had done my best costuming into a nightmarish (IMHO) version of Sandra Dee meets Joan Crawford’s eyebrows.  I had on this huge bouffant blonde wig at the fundraiser.  So I had to clear that up when I met her again.   LOL!

118_1889She has agreed to paint a portrait of my kidoodles for my husband, and I am presenting him with a card tomorrow that announces this.  He loved her work and I know he will be thrilled!!

I just printed out one of her pictures for the card and saved the picture for putting on her website (I will put a link when it goes live).  But I wanted to post a picture that she shared with me for the website – because it is just STUNNING.  I love her style.  Wow, Michel – this is amazing!

And I also wanted to share with you the story she shared with me.  Michel and her husband moved up here after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home and her studio.  She lost EVERYTHING.  Even records of paintings she had sold – all destroyed.  No record of their existence.  I think of my humble scrapbooks and projects.  I think of how it would feel to have all of it VANISH overnight.  I don’t know where I’m going with that – except that I empathize with this artist.  Enjoy her work — I know that I do.  And I’m glad to see her continue with it, albeit in Connecticut – for now.
