I hope you have been having fun during the Spellbinders Blog Bash!  I know I am.  I love seeing what each Designer has created with their dies.  It’s my turn today and I’m so excited to be able to share with all you!

Spellbinders is celebrating their 5 Year Anniversary by sharing 16 days of sneak peeks, with LOTS of drawings for dies!!  There will be a drawing for the die I am showing you and the previously revealed dies during the Spellbinders 5 Year Anniversary Celebration.  Each day an additional die is added to the daily giveaway list for a grand total of 16 dies on the 16th day of reveals!

If you’ve enjoyed seeing all the sneak peeks up to this point, I know you’re going to enjoy the remaining ones.  Don’t forget to check in with the following Designers each day to enter their contest.  You’ll have until 11:59 pm CST on January 16th to visit Keri Lee Sereika’s blog to enter yesterday’s give-away:

Jan. 18:  Donya Schroeder – Donya Schroeder
Jan. 19:  Linda Duke – Linda’s Works of Heart
Jan. 20:  Trudee Sauer – Follow your Bliss

WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON THE SPELLBINDERS BLOG

My Sneak Peek to share with you today is the Grand 12" Heirloom Scroll Border, DIE SKU #S7-013, MSRP $24.99.

S7-013

I know that this 12" border would make a wonderful border for a scrapbook page.  But I want to take it up a notch and use the border to frame an entire page.

IMG_6839_edited-1_1web

I selected a patterned paper with a bold design.  While I could easily choose a paper with an overall pattern and cut four vertical strips from it to create a frame, I wanted to choose something that would be a bit more challenging.  This paper has a great border around it.  How can we use that border for our frame?  I needed an entire sheet AND a small scrap of the same paper in order to accomplish this.

IMG_6796_edited-1_1webIMG_6797_edited-1_1web

I began by cutting a strip from the border edge of the patterned paper.  I did this for two opposite sides (right and left edges of the paper) and die cut/embossed these two pieces.

The remaining strips (top and bottom) are now shorter than 12".  In order to extend them to the full 12" length, I pull out my scrap piece of paper and die cut just enough to finish off the pieces I've already cut.

I am not bothering to try to match the pattern of the paper.  The embossing as well as the next step will unify the piece.  Once these pieces are die cut and embossed, I adhered them together to make a full 12" border.  It is really easy to layer and match up the cut edges.

IMG_6803_edited-1_1web

Now I took the Copic Airbrush System with a blue marker, and airbrushed each border through the die.  It doesn't take a lot to get a nice impact.  I start lightly and added more as needed.  See the difference?  Click on the picture for a closer look if you'd like.

IMG_6813_edited-1_1web

Next I placed all four finished borders onto a 12" printed transparency overlay and adhered it lightly at the corners to hold it in place.

IMG_6815_edited-1_1web

To attach it firmly to the transparency overlay, I placed mini-brads into the diamond cut-outs located in the center of each border piece.  As long as the head of the brad is larger than the cut-out, it will hold the two layers firmly together.  I used white flower brads from Creative Impressions.

IMG_6819_edited-1_1web

The border pieces have cut-outs along the edge, and where the four corners overlap.  Using a Cropadile, cut through the transparency overlay at these points.  I selected a thin ribbon, approx. 60" long and threaded it through these holes around the perimeter.  I left a long tail at the entrance and use the remaining ribbon to meet up and tied a bow in the corner of the frame.

IMG_6822_edited-1_1web

I used the negative space from a leftover scrap to make a title / journaling block.  I love the parentheses shaped edge!

IMG_6824_edited-1_1web

Now it's time to adhere my pictures.  One 4" x 6" and two 2" x 2 1/2" photos and a journaling spot fit perfectly on this overlay.  A title completes the page.

  • Paper: Prima Angelique collection, Clear Paintable  overlay, Times Alphabet chipboard letters and Whispered Words letter stickers.
  • Ink:  Copic Sketch Marker with ABS-1
  • Accessories:  Spellbinders S7-013 Grand 12" Heirloom Scroll Border; May Arts ribbon; Creative Impressions white flower mini-brads

But I'm not done yet.  I've created a transparent page with double-sided paper.  So we have not only one, but two layouts!  By simply 'sandwich-ing' the photographs and journaling blocks, we can get two pages from one set of supplies.  The ribbon works on both sides as well.  I simply added a bow on this side too.  The embossed border now shows its debossed side – which is equally as beautiful and a subtle decoration to the reverse side.

    IMG_6841_edited-1_1web

And there is a way to use the brads that were pierced through the other side as well.  They become anchors for these shaped clipiolas.

    IMG_6823_edited-1_1web

And now our beautiful details are doing double duty, creating a lovely layout with an efficient use of scrapbooking supplies.

If you already have another die cutting machine, and not the Spellbinders Wizard, it is so easy to use Spellbinders Dies with your machine.  Check out these Spellbinders Videos to actually see how easy it is to get professional looking projects with Spellbinders.

Now, for all the details on the BIG CONTEST!

#Aureolin Hue is a color I dearly love. It used to #Aureolin Hue is a color I dearly love. It used to be available in @goldenpaints, specifically the OPEN formulation is what I have, but somehow I missed its discontinuation and am left with only a scant bit in a remaining jar of paint. Not yet ready to give it up, I worked on creating a suitable replacement. If you look at the straight up recipe, you can see why it is no longer with us; having Hansa Yellow Light and Hansa Yellow Medium as part of its mixture. Both of those colors have been discontinued due to a downgrade in lightfastness to III (Fair). So then I started thinking... what if I work with the replacement #BenzimidazoloneYellow to start? And here is my subtitute. Benz Yellow Light with just a dashity smidgeon of #TransparentRedIronOxide seems to do the trick and ends up a lot more transparent than my original to my eye. So #modernpigments to the rescue!

Through preparations for the Zoom trainings I've done on mixing paints, I've literally tried every mix, implemented color combinations I would never have come up with on my own - painted them out, and documented all of it. Now the question is - should I write a book? Does anyone want to see the perfect complementary color mix for Medium Magenta? It makes gorgeous bougainvillea, btw.
