HGTV episode – some instructions and sources (1st project)

February 13, 2009 by admin 3 Comments

Hi!

I've already gotten several e-mails this morning.  LOL.  You watched it!!  Was I as wooden in appearance as I felt?  LOL!

Well the episode isn't as much about instruction, as it is about showing that you make something.  So I'll pump it up with the instructions I provided to the production company now, since I don't see them on the website.

Embossed Tin Scrapbook

HPIM5123web

On the inside is the 'Posh Paper Bag Pulldown' – which is made from a recycled brown paper grocery bag.  Here is the page before pictures are added.

HPIM5117web

I first learned of this technique from TechniqueJunkies newsletter.  Here is my version of the instructions for that portion:

HPIM5115web

Posh Paper Bag Pulldown
1. Spritz paper bag with water and crumple.  Do this twice.
2. Drizzle three colors of pearlescent acrylic paint on bag (I used Ranger Pearlescent Acrylic Paint)
3. Brayer with short strokes
4. (Allow paint to dry)
5. Apply metallic ink direct-to-paper, to catch hills of crumpled texture (I used Brilliance, Silver)
6. (Allow metallic ink to dry)
7. Place bag between two sheets of unprinted recycled newsprint
8. Iron to heat set ink and paint.  Do not use steam.
9. Cut painted paper bag to 8 ½” x 7”.  Fold in half length and widthwise.
10. Place over bottom, center of accordion folded insert.
11. Adhere pocket side around three edges, leaving top open for ‘pockets’.
12. Punch interior corners with corner rounder punch to match accordion booklet.
13. On pull-down side, turn each edge down to form triangles, leaving approx. 1” unfolded.
14. Cut a 2” square piece of white cardstock.  Cut diagonally to make two triangles.  Stamp ‘place’ and ‘date’ onto each white triangle of cardstock.
15. Place white cardstock triangles over the paper bag triangles and adhere.
16. Adhere a picture to each panel.  Either cut or print the pictures to 2 ½” x 3 ½”.

The decoration on the top of the tin was covered pretty well – but I made a quick video so you can see it better (I hope!)

1.Pounce domino with Alcohol Ink, stamp with Stazon ink to create ‘resist’ with flower stamp.  Quickly buff off the ink to remove the AI only where the Stazon came in contact with it.  *this step takes some practice, but it's easily done over and over again until you get the hang of it.*
2.Apply metal tab and jump rings to adhere to jewelry finding on top of tin.
3.Put small pictures into microscope slide frame and hang with jump ring.

I will post the Domino Bracelet Instructions this evening

Wow.  I can say 'as seen on tv' now, huh?

  • PLASTIC microscope slides.  Very flexible and less worrisome on a dangling charm (especially on an interactive piece) than glass ones.  I purchased them on eBay.  Not from this seller – but a similar item

  • The Metal frames and alcohol inks are from Ranger.  You could also use Copic Various ink refills for those steps.
  • DVD Tin from www.effectuality.com
  • The Spellbinders' Wizard is my die cut and embossing system.  (cracks me up that I couldn't name it on air).
  • Dominos are from http://www.articusstudiodesign.com/id38.html.
  • All metal findings, tabs, jump rings etc. were from Renaissance Art Stamps.  I am going to try and contact them today.  I will update if they are available.  They recently were informed that their building will not renew any leases – and so I think they are closing down. 🙁

Way to go, Sally Lynn!! Great to see a fellow SBAer, who I’ve met, on HGTV. I loved your projects and you did an awesome job. Not wooden at all. Hope you’re in our neighborhood again to teach a class! Now sit back and bask in the limelight!!

I really liked the Tin Scrapbook. Do you have a wine rack holding your supplies? Several years ago, I saw one at a CHA show but can’t remember what booth it was located. I am thinking she used large glasses to hold her supplies. What are you using? Can you put a close up of your’s on your site?

About Sally Lynn MacDonald

Profile photo of adminSally Lynn often mixes her love of creating and teaching art with her high-tech side – blending a love of handmade art with hybrid-digital media in what she playfully calls her ‘studio lab’. Every now and then her large-format printer is subjected to printing on a surface that definitely is not listed in the owners’ manual.

She is a maven for studio organization, using her abilities to use spreadsheets and databases to bring order from chaos. “It’s marvelous when the right and left brain actually work together in the studio!” Read More…

Instagram post 2191587425254464406_392177945 I finished my #resin #necklace, which started with a @gelpress print in the bright #copper #bezel from @ranger_ink and ended up including a wing element that my Mother-in-law gave me over the Thanksgiving holiday from a broken necklace. Sheet music #collaged into the resin says 'Cresc. molto' which roughly translated means 'growing a lot' and has become my talisman and phrase for 2020. Do you have a word or phrase for the coming year that helps guide your goals and dreams?
