COPIC: Fabric Textures

April 26, 2009 by admin 6 Comments

My last and final Mother's Day card is finished.  This card was inspired by the fact that my Mom LOVES blue – and that the Copic Creations challenge blog was featuring coloring blue jeans.

I just love this fashionable stamp by Tim Holtz for Stampers Anonymous.  I remember the first time I colored it 'post Copic' training – I made BARBIE!  LOL!  I was so happy I could color her nicely.  And so today, I'm revisiting Barbie (as I call her now); and putting her into a suit made entirely of denim.

Now the coloring for the entire image is basic marker on marker blending; using B32 / B34 / B37 as the colors for her outfit.  Once I've fully saturated the image with the lightest color, I add the midtone and high contrast — and then blend it out with the lightest color.

But how do you make that great fabric texture???  Well, I hate to give away a secret that could span how many pages of a technical manual on Copics..?  Oh yes, it spans one word – FABRIC.

I literally took my jean jacket, saturated a small section with Colorless Blender – directly from the bottle and stamped it down onto the image.

It's kinda like the Rice Krispies commercial – walking out with all that flour on your face looking like it took a lot of effort – KWIM?

For more subtle pattern, saturate less, or use the flip side of the fabric.  For higher contrast and a deeper pattern, saturate the fabric well, stamp on the saturated side and hold it down for a few more seconds.   That is what you see here, on the matteboard button.

It also gives you a better opportunity to see the texture up close.  No need to mimic what is already at hand.

Do this with any absorbent material.  Burlap works well, as does corduroy.  I've even tried it with Magic Mesh for a fun effect.

So there it is folks.  Get that big honkin' bottle of blender.  You know you want it.

Supplies:

  • Prima Majestic Cardstock collection
  • Image by Tim Holtz for Stampers Anonymous
  • Sentiment by Art Warehouse – Family Ties
  • Lace crochet ribbon from Harmony collection by Prima
  • Striped Ribbon by WeRMemoryKeepers
  • Denim Blue Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels
  • Long Deckle Rectangles dies by Spellbinders
  • Memento London Fog and also brown ink.
  • Copic Markers incl. Spica Glitter pen in Gold

Have a great Sunday.

Wow, thanks for such wonderful how-to’s with Copics. What a beautiful card. Marianne uses what she calls her “nasty rag” a lot. Several ways to get texture I guess. It’s a matter of playing with different fabrics/items until it looks like you want it to, but you do want that bottle of blender. Thanks for posting to our challenge. Hope to see you again.

She is a maven for studio organization, using her abilities to use spreadsheets and databases to bring order from chaos. “It’s marvelous when the right and left brain actually work together in the studio!” Read More…

Instagram post 2191587425254464406_392177945 I finished my #resin #necklace, which started with a @gelpress print in the bright #copper #bezel from @ranger_ink and ended up including a wing element that my Mother-in-law gave me over the Thanksgiving holiday from a broken necklace. Sheet music #collaged into the resin says 'Cresc. molto' which roughly translated means 'growing a lot' and has become my talisman and phrase for 2020. Do you have a word or phrase for the coming year that helps guide your goals and dreams?
